Свободное дыхание художника в изоляции. Арт-группа «Нежные бабы» 

3 декабря гостями образовательной части фестиваля современного искусства DOCA стали художницы группы «Нежные бабы». Арт-группа, созданная в 2008 г. Евгенией Лаптевой и Александрой Артамоновой, исследует темы, связанные с гендерной проблематикой, общепринятые взгляды на роль женщины в обществе, мифы и идеи в этой области. 

На встрече художницы поделились своим опытом переживания карантина и вынужденной изоляции 2020 г. и тем, как, на их взгляд, этот опыт повлиял на перформативные практики группы. Основные аспекты их творчества – исследование проблемы идентичности через специфику женского опыта, а также взаимодействие с ландшафтом и исторической памятью.

В первых проектах интерес художниц был сосредоточен в основном на взаимодействии и коммуникации в городском пространстве. Перформанс «Кольцевание», в легкости создания больше похожий на игру и приключение, родился из спонтанного желания помочь знакомой, мечтавшей выйти замуж. Но убедительность действия и искренность проживания заставили многих разглядеть появление новой художественной группы с ярко выраженным голосом. 

2020 год начался для художниц с резиденции на берегу Куршской косы. Любая резиденция, по их мнению, – это своеобразная форма изоляции: новое место, другой язык, незнакомые традиции. Но художнику для создания работы необходим новый визуальный опыт, и резиденция – это всегда вызов самому себе. Проект в Ниде должен был быть посвящен судьбе местных женщин, но получил совсем другое развитие. Популярный летом курорт оказался опустевшим послепраздничным сумеречным пространством. В итоге родился двухчастный перформанс в формате видео-арта и инсталляции о концентрированном одиночестве в условиях праздника «Personal Christmas».

Ландшафт и история места играют важную роль в работах группы. Мифология места в сочетании с мифологией личности, особенности проявления себя в новых обстоятельствах. Один из проектов на фестивале Бруно Шульца, в котором участвовала группа, демонстрирует, как место может подсказывать и дополнять концепцию художественной работы. 

Тема исторической памяти, живой, истинной, а не открыточной, залакированной, присутствует во многих работах художниц. «Arteria Carotis Interna» – двуканальный видеоперформанс с использованием янтарных бус, его длительность ограничивается крепостью нитки, на которую нанизан янтарь. Сувенир с нетуристическим бэкгаундом, скрывающий темы трудовых лагерей, целые поколения депортированных, расстрелы в шахтах, в которых добывали янтарь, – темы, остающиеся за ширмой курортно-праздничной атмосферы побережья Калининграда.

Перформанс для художника, по мнению участниц группы, – это реальный момент его жизни: «мы живем и существуем в тот самый момент». В то время как смонтированное видео – это «чужой сон», возможность пережить эмоции виртуально.

Проект «Кувырок» пролежал в архиве около 7 лет и наконец обрел свое новое звучание в 2020 г. Падение с самой высокой точки как возможность подумать, на что ты готов в самой высокой степени отчаяния. И образ дюн как метафора неустойчивости и потенциального разрушения.

Artist’s Freedom in Isolation. Gentle Women Art Group 

On December 3, the group of artists named Gentle Women became the guests of the educational part of the Days of Contemporary Art (DOCA) festival. Founded by Evgenia Lapteva and Aleksandra Artamonova in 2008, the art group explores topics related to gender problems, generally accepted views on the role of women in society, and the myths and ideas associated with these concepts.

During the meeting, the artists shared their quarantine and forced isolation experience in 2020. They told us about how that influenced the performative practices of the group. The main aspects of the art group’s work are exploring the problem of identity through the specificity of women’s experience and the interaction with the landscape and historical memory. 

In their first projects, the artists focused their attention primarily on interaction and communication in the urban space. The performance called Ringing, which was more like a game and an adventure thanks to easy creation, was born out of a spontaneous desire to help an acquaintance who dreamed of getting married. However, the persuasiveness and sincerity of the action resulted in the emergence of a new artistic group with a pronounced voice. 

The year 2020 began for the artists with a residency on the shore of the Curonian Spit. In their opinion, any residency is a peculiar form of isolation. That’s a new place, another language, and unfamiliar traditions. However, an artist needs a new visual experience to create an artwork. Residency is always a challenge to oneself. The project in Nida was to be about local women’s life but it developed differently. The popular summer resort turned out to be a desolate post-holiday twilight space. As a result, a two-part video art performance and installation about concentrated loneliness in the midst of the holiday called Personal Christmas was born. 

The landscape and history of the place play an important role in the group’s work. It combines the mythology of the place with the mythology of the individual, the peculiarities of one’s fulfilment in new circumstances. The group participated in the Bruno Schulz Festival with a project demonstrating how the place can suggest and complement the concept of an artwork. 

The topic of the living historical memory echoes in many works of the artists. Arteria Carotis Interna is a two-channel video performance using amber beads. Its duration is limited by the strength of the thread on which the amber is placed. This is a souvenir with a non-tourist background touching upon the topics of labour camps, entire generations of deportees, shootings in the mines where amber was collected. These topics remain hidden behind the screen of the resort and holiday atmosphere of the Kaliningrad coast. 

According to Gentle Women, for an artist, performance is a real moment in his or her life. Artists live and exist in that very moment. At the same time, the edited video is ‘someone else’s dream’, an opportunity to experience emotions virtually. 

The Somersault project was archived for about seven years and finally was brought to light in 2020. It is about falling from the highest point as an opportunity to think about what you are willing to do when having the highest degree of despair. The project also contains the image of the dunes as a metaphor for instability and potential destruction.
