Maria Romanova, Moscow, Kairou-Douketsu (Together Forever)

installation, video, mixed technique

In her work, the author proposes to look at two different systems and find a mirror reflection of their elements: human and non-human agents, dreamy solitude and blissful togetherness, nourishing environments leading to amorous confinement. Images of non-existent objects of desire collide with reality and collapse. However, the obsession with thoughts of a perfect love union remains a part of existence like an indestructible plastic wrap.

Venus' Flower Basket or ‘Euplectella aspergillum’ is one of the most beautiful glass sponges. The unique symbiosis of the Venus' Flower Basket with deep-sea shrimp became the basis of a Japanese tradition. According to that tradition, newly wedded couple receives the skeleton of this sponge with two shrimps that have settled in its inner cavity as a gift. The shrimps enter the cavity through the mouth of the sponge and live there by feeding on organics. They feel safe, fed, and supplied with fresh water in the Venus' Flower Basket. That’s why they have no desire to leave the body of the sponge. After a while, the shrimps grow up and become prisoners of the Venus' Flower Basket because they cannot leave it through the sponge’s surface. However, the shrimps (and there are always a couple of them) are not bothered by that. They feel fine in their ‘confinement’.
